In early 2023, Rejen Architects were appointed to revisit a lapsed planning approval for the conversion of a listed maritime warehouse on Donegall Quay, Belfast. The previous strategy proposed a restaurant across all four floors — an approach that presented operational and planning challenges.

Rob Jennings led a rethink of the reuse strategy, introducing a more viable solution: a ground-floor café/restaurant with co-working and studio spaces above. This mixed-use approach preserved the building’s character while delivering commercial viability. The building, one of only three surviving from Belfast’s early 18th-century quay, demanded highly sensitive interventions.

Rejen also helped the client secure £25,000 in grant support from Belfast City Council’s ‘Vacant to Vibrant’ scheme and worked closely with the Historic Buildings Unit to secure condition-free listed building consent.
