The Old Inn Crawfordsburn, a 17th-century coaching inn at the edge of Crawfordsburn Forest Park, has undergone significant investment in recent years — including new spa facilities and upgraded bedrooms. With rising visitor numbers and limited accommodation on site, Rejen Architects was appointed to develop a major expansion that would sensitively extend the hotel’s offer.

Their sensitivity to heritage, combined with contemporary thinking, made Rejen an ideal partner for the transformation of this historic site.

The site presented significant design challenges: it is steeply sloping, tightly constrained, and adjacent to sensitive woodland and existing buildings. Rejen’s proposal included a modular new bedroom wing and spa set on a concrete plinth, with a treetop viewing platform that opens onto panoramic views of the forest and Belfast Lough.

The 30 new guest rooms are designed to be craned into place as pre-fabricated modules, ensuring minimal disruption to hotel operations during construction. This approach also supports off-site quality control and rapid programme delivery. The spa is embedded into the lower level, offering a high-end guest experience while blending seamlessly into the dramatic natural setting.
